I’m sure
someone has asked you at one time or another, “If a tree falls
in the forest, and there is no one around to hear it, does
it still make a sound?”
That’s
a rather philosophical question I know, but it’s one my children
love to ponder upon. Another favorite is…”Which came first,
the chicken or the egg?” Or…yet another one…”Why
did the chicken cross the road?”
We all
know that a tree falling has to make a noise even if there
is no one around to hear it, don’t we? Or do we?
And we
all know that God created the chicken first. Didn’t
He?
As far
as why the chicken crosses the road…I really have no idea.
I just know that’s a favorite question asked me by my children,
that I really have no reasonable answer to.
Children
can ask some of the most perplexing questions can’t they?
I guess
we can ask some perplexing questions too, of God. Similar
to the which came first the chicken or the egg? I know
we give God more than a few chuckles.
After endless
speculation and pestering from my children on these questions,
I tend to reach a point of exasperation. “You will just
have to take my word for it” I finally end up telling them.
Now my
question to you is…if Christ died and rose again, and we weren’t
there to see it, did he really? Are we really saved
by grace? Is Christ our Savior and did he die for us
on the cross to save us from our sin, just because He loved
us?
Hebrews
11:1 states “Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and
certain of what we do no see (or hear for that matter).
I have heard a tree fall when my father chopped one down many
years ago. It did make a noise. So I can go on
“faith” that when a tree falls in the forest it will make
a sound, whether I am around to hear it or not.
Genesis
2:19 also states “Now the Lord God had formed out of the ground
all the beast of the field and all the birds of the air.
He brought them to Adam to see what he would name them, and
whatever the man called each living creature that was it’s
name.” Hmmm…each living creature….not an egg. So I can
surmise from the Bible, that the chicken was created before
the egg. Of course, this all depends upon
my believing in things that I have not seen. Faith…
So friends….if
a tree falls in the forest, and no one is around to hear it,
does it make a sound? Did Christ die on a tree, did
he rise from the grave and arise to heaven? Did God
create a chicken or an egg first?
It depends
on our faith in things not seen, or heard.
It doesn’t
really matter about the chicken or the egg, or the sound in
the forest…but it does really matter to me that Christ did
die for me, and was buried, and rose again. It matters
to me that He saved me from my sins by grace.
We often
tell our friends who come to us for advice in times of trouble
to “have faith.”
Well, brothers
and sisters, have faith. God is in charge. If
you need more faith, the neat thing is…all we have to do is
ask Him for it. He will supply all of our needs. We
can take that on faith too! Hallelujah for that!
